New AC Unit
Atlanta, GA – Your air conditioning unit is an important component of your home. The average unit will last between 10 and 20 years, so it is more than likely at some point in your home owning life, you will need to purchase a new one. But how can you know what you should look for?

First, it’s important to understand what size unit is best for your home. A unit that is too big or to small won’t be able to efficiently cool your home. You may think you can just purchase a unit the exact same size as your old one, but it is important to take into account any changes you may have made to your home in the time since the last unit was installed. If you have made any additions to your home, you may need a larger unit to accommodate the new spaces. It’s also important to consider upgrades that may have been made, such as replacing drafty windows or installing new insulation.

A licensed HVAC technician can perform a load calculation to determine what size air conditioning unit will work the best for your space. You’ll want to ensure the unit is large enough to keep your home comfortable, but not so large that it becomes an energy drain. A unit that is too large will cycle on and off more frequently, which takes more electricity and reduces its energy efficiency. Likewise, a unit that is too small won’t be able to keep up with the demands of a space that is too large. Ensuring you purchase the right size is important for efficiency – an overworked unit will increase your energy bills, while also decreasing your home’s comfort and shortening its lifespan.

The Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio or SEER is also something to consider. The SEER number tells you how energy efficient a unit is. The government requires all units to have a SEER of at least 13, but anything 14 or higher will be deemed “energy efficient.” For warmer, more humid climates, a higher SEER rating may be recommended.

Most consumers shop by price. While it is important to look at the bottom line, it is also important that you are comparing apples to apples. If you have gotten quotes from more than one company, you need to be sure what you are comparing is the same. First, are the quotes for the same unit – size, SEER, etc? Then, do both quotes offer complete prices that cover not only the cost of the unit, but also installation? Be sure there will be no hidden fees that may show up at the end of installation.

It’s also important to compare the experience and knowledge of the companies offering the quotes. Are the companies fully insured and only use technicians with the proper certifications? Not all HVAC companies are equal, so it is important to find one who can not only give you a price that fits into your budget, but one that offers excellent service, as well.
